What Caught our Attention - March 2023

[RB]: I'm not going to lie: March snuck up on me. Obviously it was all the prep that goes into pulling off a conference like Base Camp. Expect a big update on what was discussed at Base Camp during our recap webinar on April 5th (registration open). More individual project updates will be coming as well.
Heading into March, I'm still thinking about automation. In fact, I had quite the debate over drinks with Alex Cone. To almost criminally paraphrase Alex, ChatGPT doesn't lend itself to a sustainable business model for publishers. On that we agree, but the question is: what can we do about it? Do we try to put a halt on progress or do we once again let things happen to us only to regret it some years from now. I argue it's hard to halt technology, but I agree that if AI solutions are built off the backs of publishers, publishers need to get paid. I'd love to hear some thoughts on this.
Email is also top of mind as so much weight is being put upon publishers to collect them and I feel like we're not setting ourselves up for success. For example, I didn't know much about machine generated emails until I read this report. As publishers, we need to make sure to capture real email addressses and that means drawing a line in the sand on what types of email addresses we will accept.
Data clean rooms are top of mind only because we've had a couple of fantastic virtual roundtables recently on the topic. Lots o' buzz, but not lots o' transactions. It doesn't mean that you shouldn't build a data clean room strategy today. Some things to consider:
- to date getting legal approval is a major hurdle.
- we need a way to test and verify that data clean rooms do what they say and keep data safe.
- the consensus has been that upping CPMs is not going to be the model for selling your data clean room.
