The desire to get back to in-person events is at an all-time high. The budget to get to them is not. It really comes down to justifying the cost and the time to attend for someone to sign up. We all love our boondoggles, but if we can't make the case to go someplace, we're not going.
With that thought in mind that we set up prep calls with our Base Camp attendees to make sure we develop the agenda they NEED to come to camp. We've had four sessions already and five more scheduled. In the first four, it was amazing to hear the desire to get together to change the industry. "Break the stalemate" was one of my favorite lines. People want results, not just talk.
With all that feedback, the agenda has been updated and the goal of the sessions has been further focused to have substantive outcomes. There is no better example than the discussion around privacy regulation. Some people don't want to talk for 40 minutes about regulation. They want to talk about it for 3 HOURS. Why? Because it's the biggest topic in the world to them and they want to collaborate and get results! So, if there are enough people who want to have this discussion, we're creating a track just for them and giving them their own room. I'll put it out there: if privacy regulation is your main focus/fear – we might have the event for you.
Base Camp is meant to have an "unconferency feel" and that feel will remain. However, it's clear people know that there is no sailing through 2023. Change or be changed. We're going to roll up our sleeves in Newport Beach and get some work done. I can't wait.
ALM: I haven't seen Stephanie Layser in forever. Help me make sure to connect with her at ALM. Oh, and if you want to connect while there, let's do it. If I'm not talking with someone or glancing feverishly around the room for my next meeting, it was meant to be. Say hi!
